It's Like a Heat Wave

The last time I looked at the weather forecast for this weekend showed 106 degrees Fahrenheit.  I'm glad we did the raku firing last weekend when it was only in the 90's.

I am a gardener as well as a potter.  I'm not really good at it all the time but I do enjoy growing some pretty flowers and my own vegetables.   With this kind of heat I'm going to be making a lot of trips to the rain barrels trying to keep my plants from experiencing too much damage. I guess most of the well established ones will survive but I do have some that are still newish and a bit weak, they will need care.

Plants aren't the only things that will need care.  The pets will all spend most of the weekend indoors in the air conditioning.  I'll also try to keep some tabs on my friends and neighbors.  This type of heat can kill someone who doesn't have a/c (and an old a/c unit may break down under the strain).  If you live in an area that is being hit with this heat wave please check on people.  If your a/c breaks go to the library or  to the mall (the one time I'll tell someone to go the the mall but you could spend a few hours reading in a big box book store, you don't have to buy anything), spend the afternoon in a museum or theater.  Take care of yourselves, your people and your pets.

  1. It's only going to be 90 here in Minnesota today but on those upper 90 days, I love to go on the cave tours here. It's an awesome break form the afternoon heat.

  2. great tips- I am trying to shade my plants through this heat wave. A lot of extra work but worth it I hope.
My mother refuses a/c.. but stays as cool as possible.

  3. burning in my heart.

I like to put out a bowl of water for the birds in the shade; I always worry about them being able to find some water. No matter where I put it they always seem to find it too.

    1. That's a very good point Linda. I have a bird bath near the veggie garden so it get's filled whenever I use the sprinkler but it's in the sun. I'll bet they would appreciate some in the shade too. I know I've got a bowl in the seconds bin.

  4. Hi Meredith, shading them is a good idea but even those in the shade garden are looking a bit sad already.
I hope your mother is okay in this heat, I'm sure you'll keep an eye on her.

  5. great tips! I am trying to keep on top of my plants too.
I turned the a/c off upstairs but my cat insists on sleep up there when she has her own soft bed in an air conditioned room downstairs. I think I will turn the a/c on low up there. Probably better for the unit too.

    1. Maybe your cat likes to be really warm Michele. I know I have to carry Ginger the Min-Pin into the house otherwise she'll lay in the grass and sunbathe!

  7. My cat, who also is ginger, would need some encouragement to come inside too. But it is cold here now, so instead she drives me crazy every morning ...in and out.. in and out....waiting for that perfect patch of sunny grass to arrive.

That is a beautiful pot btw. I like the way she shape of the horse reflects the shape of the pot ( or vice versa?!).
