French Butter Keepers

One of my hottest selling items are my French Butter Keepers.  Very often someone will come into my booth looking for one, or once they see them they think it's a great idea and want one.  Many people like the one they bought so much they come back to buy another one to give as a gift.  It seems like a lot of people like fresh tasting, soft butter that they can spread on bread or toast without the bread ripping.

So what is it and how does it work.


It's a pretty simple concept, you smoosh the butter into the top section of the butter keeper and put a little water in the bottom section.  The water creates a seal which keeps the butter fresh even when it's sitting on the counter.  I always recommend that you change the water every 5 - 10 days depending on how warm you keep your home.

A customer did ask about the water sticking to the butter.  I've never known this to be a problem.  The butter is upside down in the water so it shouldn't pick any up, besides, butter is slippery and repels moisture.

  1. Lori, your butter keeper looks super, so soft and subtle is the design. I'm learning more and more about your pottery style looking at photos of your work here on your blog.

    I've never used nor made one of these but have always wondered about their use when I've read about them. I may just have to order one of yours since I use butter so often in my recipes and Gary likes semi soft butter for his English muffin in the morning.

    If only I didn't have to be gluten free I could really enjoy some sour dough french bread (think San Francisco sour dough french bread from down on Fisherman's Wharf) with soft butter spread upon it. Sometimes you never fully appreciate something until you can't have it any longer.

    1. Thanks Linda, It's got to be tough keeping butter well in Florida. A butter keeper would help, I'll be posting some on Etsy after Mother's Day when I'm done with Festivals for the year.

  2. We bake lots of bread and there is just nothing like soft spreadable butter with freshly made bread. Your butter keepers are very cool.

  3. sweet- we leave our butter out all the time in a covered butter dish and never have any problems with it.

  4. The fellow I apprenticed to was joking with me recently about a woman who also makes the butter keepers, and her butter always falls out and he was like "well, all you have to do is angle it a bit..."...anyway...potter's find that sort of thing hilarious....

  5. every so often someone comes in the gallery looking for a french butter dish, Jeff used to make them, i tried a few years ago but it was ugly and didn't fit together well so i abandoned the idea.
