Goals

This is the time of year when people see a new beginning and start setting a lot of goals for themselves. They try to loose weight, quit some bad habit or do better at something.  These are all great ideas but sometimes the best of intentions in January are lost within a few months, sometimes a few days.  I'm not being critical, I can come up with an improvement plan then forget about it in a matter of minutes.

So what do we do to stay on track?

First, write it down.  Whatever your goal of goals may be put them in writing, a file on your computer works just as well as a piece of paper as long as you can find that document later.

Second, know yourself.  How has goal setting worked for you in the past?  Do you follow the plan for days, weeks, or months?  Say you're pretty good at following a plan for a few months but then you start to wander from the plan you know you'll need a reminder in two to three months.

Now set a calendar reminder to go back and review your goals.  You can write this on your desk or kitchen calendar or use an application like google calendars, just set a reminder.  It would also be a good idea to remind yourself where you put the document with your list of goals so you can find it easily.

Now when you are just about to become distracted about the goals you have just set because it's January, you can become re-acquainted with them and (hopefully) reinsured to reach them.

  1. My plan is to not have a plan, haha! I'm not much of a goal setting person, I just float through life aimlessly. Not the best way to be successful, but I can't seem to be any other way.... Sigh....

  2. For the past three years I've been floating but a plan is now formulating in my mind. Perhaps with your prompting post I will take the time to write it all down. I am hoping having a plan will keep my organized on track with my goals. I had scraps of paper since we moved here but they are all eventually misplaced and when I find them again they are outdated.

    1. Linda, it's so tempting to write down an idea on a scrap of paper as soon as the idea blossoms in your head, but you should at least have a folder to put those scraps into for review.

  3. My sculpting and pottery are noted in my sketchbook. I was happy to invest in a good one, and being frugal, I use it front to back, then back again...just writing on the right side each way. (I'm on my second one) I am delighted to go back through to find glaze notes...so important with all those choices. I think I usually have one page a week, unless I've been doing lots of production. I also keep inspirational notes there. Goals not so much part of my life. I live closer to weekly objectives, but mainly just each day.

    1. Hi Barbara, keeping ideas and the like in a sketchbook is a great idea, I imagine it would be really hard to find something if you've been keeping ideas only in a sketchbook for 30 years but the searching would be so much fun.

  4. using iCalendar to set up goal reminders, what a great idea! I use it to remind me to pay bills and go to meetings, so why not use to keep track of myself? Great post.

  6. Good advice Lori. I am always setting goals and getting sidetracked. And I too have rows of bits of paper around me - I see five stickies in front of me now!
I like your eagle mug - the shape and the subtle orange colour.
