Martha Grover Demo
One of the teacher's assistants for the Jim Lawton workshop I just attended at Penland was Martha Grover. This presented a great opportunity for all the students in the class because she gives workshops also. I think we all felt like she was an amazing added bonus. Besides being a really nice, down to Earth person, she's a terrific potter.
We talked her into doing a demo so she and the other teacher's assistant, Bailey Arend did "dueling demos" where they both demonstrated something in their style of work and answered quite a few questions about their education, their views on pottery, where they wanted to go with their work, etc. Both demos were really excellent, if you get a chance to go to a workshop that Martha Grover is presenting I think you should. While you're waiting for a workshop you could order the DVD that was just released through the ceramic arts bookstore. I haven't seen the DVD, and nobody has asked me to promote it, I simply suspect it will be good because of having met Martha and seen her working for two weeks at Penland.

Those penland workshops sound like so much fun, one of these days I hope to get up there, thanks for sharing all the info about the workshops.
ReplyDeleteThey are fun Linda, they are also really intense, it's like taking a semester of ceramics in college but doing it in only 2 weeks.
DeleteMartha was one of the presenters at the Pottery Conference in Asheboro, NC this year. Jeff went and then came home and shared some of her techniques with me. The other day I watched an excerpt from her DVD on Ceramic Arts Daily, it was great! I would love to take a workshop with her.
ReplyDeleteYes, Michele, I remember you started using her lid making technique after that. Are you still doing them that way?
DeleteI've enjoyed watching Martha Grover's pots since she was in Ceramics Monthly a few years back...and I'd love to get the DVD, as well as attend one of her workshops. Sounds great!
ReplyDeleteYou should Barbara, you'd love it.
DeleteLori, I have made a few lids using her technique and plan to continue. I am still very lid shy... I seem to avoid them like the plague for fear of failure!
ReplyDeleteThanks for highlighting Martha - I went to check out the DVD link you sent and there look to be quite a few great ones there!
