Back to the Drawing Board

Have you ever been asked to create something and suddenly your mind goes blank like you have never had a creative moment in your life?  That happens to me all the time.  I can think of a million different ideas in my sleep but ask me to come up with an idea and my mind goes mute.  That's what has happened since I was invited to participate in a show that Kathy King is curating at Mudfire.  I'm honored and I am planning to do something really great just as soon as I know what that is.  Oh, I've had some ideas but I can't see them in my mind's eye.  I've even tried something but the prototype proved to be too ugly.

My solution is usually to relax and stop thinking about this so that something will come to me, but that's not happening this time.  What do you do when you've got a show theme to fulfill but your mind is drawing a blank?

FUNky Casserole

Speaking of shows, Michele Hastings, Gary Rith and I are getting the next Pottery Pals show together right now.  We'll let you know when it's all together, it's been fun.

  1. That's so much more than a funky casserole you've shown there. A trip to a different location or venue than I normally go to usually sparks my creative bug and especially looking at art other than pottery, like sculpture, baskets, wood, fiber, paintings. I have really found taking photos of my work and posting on my blog really does stimulate my imagination because I have to put into words my thought and that makes me think or analyze, strange, but for me it's so true. And then there is looking at work I did some time ago that also stimulates my imagination. What is the theme of the show?

  2. Hi Linda, thanks you make some good points, it's a perspective change.

The show is called "Clay Pride" it's scheduled around the Atlanta Pride Festival in October.

  3. I know what you mean about creative funk. But I believe you'll come up with some amazing ideas and I am loving the caserole dish!

  4. Lori I know exactly what you mean. It has happened to me a lot recently with photoadayjuly. I mean, what can you do with "toothbrush" as a theme?? I agree with you...just relax and have fun. But then- photoaday wasn't really a stressed filled thing, just a bit of fun. Preparing for an exhibition is different and yet, the same "relax and enjoy it" does apply.

On the subject of toothbrushes, someone superimposed a row of vertical toothbrushes on a green field - fantastic! I wish I had thought of that!

I do like your casserole too-I can see it in my house :)

  5. "Where do ideas come from" was the over arching question in my class this week. I have always found ideas like to interupt so the best thing I do to force an idea is to get totally involved making something else and the brilliant idea will muscle through to interupt me. It works for me.

    1. Hi JB, welcome to the blog, thanks for dropping by and commenting. You are so right about ideas liking to interrupt, it always seems like the best ideas just show up when we stop searching for them.
