Shaving Bowl
A few years ago a man contacted me to order a shaving scuttle. This is a type of bowl that one can use to mix up shaving cream and shaving soap and warm it at the same time. I made one for him which he liked so I made more and have sold a few. They do attract attention because people who are not into the wet shaving culture (yes, there is a wet shave culture) always want to know how itās used.
About a year later he contacted me again and we designed a holder for his razors, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Itās a sweet little design but I havenāt made very many of them. Iām not at all sure why, maybe itās something I have to re-think, it might be something lots of other people would like.
Recently, he ordered a shaving bowl. We discussed the functionality of the piece, how it had to be able to fit into the palm and be gripped while the shaving soap and shaving cream are being mixed with the brush. This is what I created. Iām really happy with it, I just love the profile.
I tend to think of handcrafted pottery being used in the kitchen, dinning room, and living room but Iām really starting to think about making more pottery for the bathroom. Itās where we often start our day, it should be filled with special things too.

beautiful shape and love the interior glaze, wish you had show a top down view too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda, itās funny, I love the profile so much I didnāt think about photographing the inside. Thanks for the reminder that we all see things from a different perspective.
DeleteVery nice! I hear the wet shave culture is huge right now... there are forums and group devoted to it.
ReplyDeleteYes, MichĆØle, Iāve seen that, itās pretty huge. Of course it makes sense to start your day off with a little special care.
DeleteThanks Cheri, as long as itās a handcrafted mug it should be fine ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh, I see my rice and veggies in that sweet bowl instead :) Hey, can you believe I have been using a coffee cup I made in 1989 for shaving since...1989? I just toss in the very end of our bar soap scraps then use the wet shaving brush and tada! Never have understood why people bother with shaving cream....crap, this will make for a good blog post tomorrow :)
ReplyDeleteIt may be a bit shallow for rice but ice cream would work in it. I think itās really cool that youāve been using the same mug since 1989, good job. I look forward to your blog post tomorrow, glad I could inspire you Gary.
DeleteI still have the shaving mug my dad used every morning. Somehow a bowl shaped like this seems to make much more sense, easier to stir the brush around.... Very nice.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like a lot of men use mugs and now someone has figured out that a bowl shape works better or is easier. I love that you still have your dadās shaving mug.
