How Do You Get Organized?

I was recently talking to a gallery owner who was commenting how some artists, while very talented, are not always easy to work with because they aren't very professional.  Not that they were rude or anything like that, they were unsure of how to price their art or inconsistant with pricing and they were disorganized.  It sounds silly that with so many tools at our finger tips it would be difficult to be or stay organized, but it happens.  The best tool for helping to keep you organized will fail if you don't use it.  Yes, sometimes it will fail even if you use it, but not using it is a promise of failure.

To my way of thinking the tools that I'm most likely to use are easy to use but also give me ample options.  I want to be able to put as much information or as little as possible and I want to be able to share some of it.

As you can see from my website I use google calendar.  I like how it integrates with iCal, I can imbed it into my webpage and this blog and I can keep some calendar entries private while making others public.  You may want to know when a gallery show opens or when you can find me at a festival, you don't want to know when my next dentist appointment is.  But I can keep those all in the same place and just choose who sees them.

The other tool I'm enjoying is called Do It (Tomorrow), it's perfect for procrastinators.  You make a simple to do list, as you do the tasks you can cross them off or you can push them off until tomorrow.  It's that easy.  It's on-line and you can get iPhone, iPad and Android apps so you have it with you if you have one of those devices.

  1. I slide back and forth between being organized and disorganized. The one thing I do use consistently is iCalendar. I set it up to e-mail me reminders about the important stuff and to repeat monthly ongoing items (like car payment reminders). I didn't know google calendar can sink with it. We use google calendar at the co-op I belong to. I am going to look into seeing if that can be done with a group used calendar.

    1. Hi Michele, iCal is great for those repeat items, I need the reminders too. The co-op I work at uses google calendar and I have it set up to send me a reminder, I think it's through iCal but I did it so long ago I've forgotten. Let me know if I can help you set it up.

  2. I have started using my iPad more and more and it is now the only calendar I have. I also keep a clip board with a legal pad in my studio and throughout the day if I think of something I need to do or want to do I jot it down. That pad seems to be the only place I will read the notes I make. I recently bought an old canvas covered three ring binder, old school, and I keep inventory sheets for each gallery or show I am doing in it. I tried excel files for this but I would lose them in my really odd computer filing system. The binder makes for easy quick reference.

    1. Hey Tracey, the old paper methods still work really well for some people. My photo filling system is really odd but my inventory excel sheets are always easy to find, go figure.

  3. A successful attack on clutter requires time, energy and motivation.

  4. I still love a physical list; it's so satisfying to cross those items off with a flourish.
On the other hand, I am tempted to download the app because the only thing I really use my iphone for so far is words with friends.

    1. You'd like this app Barb, you get to cross things off with a satisfying flourish and no trees are harmed.
