Insomnia

I've not been sleeping very well the past few nights.  Oh, I fall asleep early enough while I'm trying to read a book.  That's not a problem.  It's the waking up in the middle of the night and my mind won't turn off.  I lay there and think of all sorts of stuff, I think about my finances, I think about pottery, I think about where I should move the bégonias that seem to be getting too much sun, all sorts of important stuff.

At 4:30 in the morning I realized that I had totally forgotten to make a piece that I promised someone.  It had just completely slipped my mind, gone to the land of the lost thoughts, somewhere other than my memory.  Now my memory is not great but mostly I forget names, not making a piece for someone.  The thing is the woman who asked for it was so nice I was really, really excited to make it for her.  I was just in the middle of a bunch of shows and decided that it could wait for a minute.  Now I'm really late in getting it to her and under pressure.   Waiting until the last minute does not work well for me.  I normally like to give myself ample time to complete a task.  Especially with pottery since so much can go wrong.

Covered Jar

Well, I got the piece made and drying, plus an extra just in case of a flaw.  Now it's up to the kiln gods.  Wish me luck.

  1. You should call me, I'm up, haha! I normally sleep from 4am-6am, that's about it! WIsh I could turn off my brain for just a few hours, but I do get a lot of thinking done during the night! Fingers crossed, but you shouldn't tell the piece that it's special, they like to kill themselves when they have a designated home :) good luck!

    1. Tracey, Ha, if your phone rang at 2am you'd have a heart attack and then kill me. Of course I wouldn't blame you.
You're right about the special pieces becoming suicidal, why is that? They seem to have so much to live for.

  2. You are smart to make extras, Gary read a small glass of milk before bedis supposed to help, he tried it and it didn't work for him, maybe a walk in the afternoon might help. I wake up at odd hours too, I only need six hours max of sleep a night, so sometimes I walk up at 3 or 4 am

    1. Linda, my grandmother used to drink warm milk before bed, yuk! I think part of the problem is my oldest dog doesn't sleep well either, he wakes me up then I can't get back to sleep...of course he's snoozing away 5 minutes after he's woken me.

  3. Insomnia and I are old friends.
It use to bother me a lot and now i get up and read or watch boring tv- or go online or draw....I just find something to do and usually I can go back to sleep about 5-6 for a nap.
It has gottne better- it was way worse before.
I sometimes fall asleep by counting back from 100-I must draw each number out very slowly.
IF i find myself at 30-it is time to get up!

  4. Thanks for the suggestions Meredith. I don't have a TV but I've found that listening to audio books helps, especially if it's one that I have already listened to, that way I don't get wrapped up in the story. It's like bed time stories for a (sort of) adult.

  5. There must be something in the air, I haven't been sleeping well either... until it's time to get up and then I oversleep. Good think I am self employed.

    1. Yes Michele, isn't it funny how we sleep the best 15 minutes before the alarm goes off.

  6. I need my six hours a night. The problem being that if I go to sleep at nine, I'm awake at 3AM. If it's the animal that have wakened me early I find rereading a book I know really well puts me back to sleep. Also find that Yoyo Ma's recordings of The Unaccompanied Cello Sonatas relax me. Concentrating on Bach works well for me. Sometimes I just have to take a siesta in the late afternoon and get back into a better schedule.

Hope the jars work well. May the kiln gods smile on you.
