Visiting Michelangelo's David

Replica of Michelangelo's David
I've just returned from a wonderful holiday in Italy. The art and architecture is amazing and the landscape is stunningly beautiful. I think if I moved there today and saw as much art as was possible everyday I would still not be able to view it all in my lifetime. Of course one of the most famous pieces that I just had to see was Michelangelo's David at the Accademia Gallery in Florence (Firenze).
I've been familiar with this statue for years.  Dad gave my mother a small replica for Christmas a long time ago and I always thought it was beautiful.  The original is awe inspiring.  The detail is amazing. I can't fathom how it was possible to make hard marble look so smooth and soft without power tools but what really struck me was how the grain of the marble works so well with the lines of the sculpture.  This is something I've not seen in any reproduction.  I've not noticed it properly in any photographs I've seen of the original.
I normally try to avoid the very touristy places when I'm on vacation but I am so glad that I did go to see David and recommend going to anyone.
The statue pictured here is the fake David that stands in the Palazzo Vecchio (more on that in a future post) where the original stood until 1873.  I've used this picture only because I was unable to take pictures in the Gallery.  If you're interested in seeing more pictures I've been posting them on my FaceBook page.

  1. I am very sorry I have been running behind, and lost track of your blog for a couple of weeks! Everything you have here is sooo exciting :)
I am not willing to share my recipe, but I will help you make your own, OK? This is what you need:
--do you have a white glaze recipe? if you don't there are many you can choose from. This is your base.
--from axner in Florida or laguna in Ohio, or anywhere, order the super expensive:
CERDEC DEGUSSA yellow pigment/stain/colorant. Its like 50 to 60 bucks a pound.---it is a super strong stain, stronger and more stable than yellow mason stains at stoneware temp
---experiment adding the stain to the white, see how it goes :) That is what I did!!!!!!
Be well and keep in touch, gr
